Welcome to Night Vale [Inspiration District]

WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates
for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news,
announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky,
dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.

Listening to story/fiction podcasts is easily one of my favourite things to do. I always find it engrossing how much storytelling can be done in an audio dramatization. These scripted, aural masterpieces are the  best example of all the possibilities and avenues available for bringing an idea to life. For me, my go-to for a quirky dark- (and paranormal-) humor plot definitely has to be Welcome to Night Vale.

A simple way to explain it is that: Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast presented as a radio show for the fictional town of Night Vale, reporting on the strange events that occur within it.

The best thing about this 100+ episodic podcast by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, is the unpredictability with its concepts, twists and “characters” within the town.

As part of the Night Vale Presents Network, it is one the 4 shows they have on their roster for anyone who’s looking to deviate from everyday storytelling. The growing fandom, merch and live shows is proof that you should give it (or any of their other shows) a listen.

As a ‘writer’ who does most of my pieces in free-form, new and exciting platforms and storytellers are always catching my eye — or ear and remind me that how I express myself shouldn’t matter once I enjoy how I do it.
